July 29, 2025, Accra His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), has ordered the GAF to formally transition from peacekeeping to peace enforcement operations in Bawku and the surrounding territories.
Rising levels of violence, lethal retaliatory attacks, and increasing instability in Bawku and the surrounding areas, including Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla, have prompted the transitioning decision, which goes into force immediately.
Intermittent violence that continues to jeopardize national security and public safety has been attributed to armed organizations.
The GAF emphasized the pressing need to restore law and order through forceful and targeted military operations in a news release. This was released by the Department of Public Relations at the General Headquarters in Burma Camp, Accra.
Stabilizing the impacted areas and improving community protection will be the main goals of the peace enforcement stance.
The military will use any force required to maintain law and order and guarantee that all restrictions are fully enforced.
In the impacted areas, a new curfew has been implemented from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and will be rigorously adhered to.
“The Ghana Armed Forces remains fully committed and ready to execute its constitutional mandate to ensure that the country is peaceful and its citizens are safe,” stated Captain VA Arhin (Ghana Navy), Acting Director General of Public Relations.
All well-meaning Ghanaians are being urged by GAF to work with the security forces. Particularly those who live in Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, Zebilla, and the surrounding areas.
Attacks on security officers and any attempts to divert operations will be dealt with appropriately, the statement added.
The military calls on all civilians to follow orders and assist the operation. This to restore calm and guarantee enduring peace in the area as the peace enforcement efforts pick up speed.
